Emergency personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene first, but the incident is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.
Los Angeles County consistently records the highest volume of traffic collisions in California due to its large population and extensive road network. While the number of victims killed and injured saw a significant decline from a high of over 36,000 in 2018 and 2019 to around 8,944 in 2022, recent data
indicates persistent safety challenges and potentially rising trends in recent years. In 2023, the county recorded over 40,700 traffic crashes, with roughly 40,389 resulting in injury or death. Preliminary data for 2024 suggested an even higher rate of serious or deadly crashes, climbing to an average of around 160 per day. Fatalities in Los Angeles City alone exceeded homicides for the second consecutive year in 2024, with 302 traffic deaths compared to 268 homicides. A highly vulnerable group in these statistics is pedestrians, who account for over one-third of traffic deaths in the county. In 2022, total county-wide fatalities were 1,059, which included 375 pedestrians, 130 motorcyclists, and 39 cyclists. Key contributing factors to these incidents include speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.
The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) compiles car crash data and rankings with a mission to deliver traffic safety programs to prevent people from being killed and seriously injured in California.
