Between 2021 and 2023, serious traffic collision counts in Los Angeles declined substantially according to California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) data. In 2021, the city had 11,202 fatal and injury victims, ranking among the highest in its peer group of large California cities. In 2022, that number fell to 8,944 victims and continued to decrease to 8,116 victims in 2023, showing a notable reduction in reported serious crashes over time. Alcohol-involved collision victims fell from 2,033 in 2021 to 1,676 in 2022 and 1,508 in 2023. Motorcycle, pedestrian, and bicyclist victim counts also declined year-over-year, with motorcycle involvement dropping from 712 to 553, and pedestrians from 1,619 to 1,432 during the same period. Speed-related and nighttime collisions exhibited similar downward movement, though hit-and-run counts remained high. These trends suggest gradual improvements in some serious crash metrics even as traffic safety challenges persist.
