Over the past several years, Los Angeles has seen a notable shift in serious traffic collision patterns. Analysis of police-reported data shows that traffic deaths climbed to 312 in 2022, a level not seen in decades and driven largely by pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities. Pedestrian deaths rose significantly compared with earlier years, reflecting a troubling trend even as total vehicle occupant fatalities remained high. Official California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) rankings indicate a decline in total fatal and injury collision victims — from 11,202 in 2021 to 8,944 in 2022, and 8,116 in 2023 — suggesting reduced serious crash counts over time. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and speed-related crashes remain prominent components of these totals.
