Los Angeles County remains the most critical focal point for traffic safety in California, consistently reporting the highest volume of fatalities and injuries in the state. According to the most recent 2023–2024 OTS (Office of Traffic Safety) data, the county recorded over 58,000 crashes involving death or injury. While the county’s massive population often places it in the middle of “per capita” rankings, its absolute numbers are staggering: in 2024, it recorded 653 fatalities, including 299 speeding-related deaths and 1,124 serious injuries linked to excessive speed—ranking 1st in the state for both categories.
Vulnerable road users are particularly at risk, with pedestrians accounting for over 260 deaths annually. Behaviorally, the county faces significant hurdles with DUI and hit-and-run incidents, consistently ranking among the top five counties for alcohol-involved fatal and serious injuries.
