According to 2024–2025 FRA and Operation Lifesaver data, the state recorded 185 grade-crossing collisions in 2024, resulting in 49 deaths and 49 injuries. While California ranks second for crossing incidents, it holds the top spot for trespassing fatalities, with approximately 184 deaths occurring away from designated crossings in 2024. Preliminary 2025 data shows a slight decline to 182 collisions and 48 fatalities, yet California’s fatality rate at crossings remains more than double that of any other state.
