Lake Cachuma, CA. – A driver was critically injured Thursday afternoon after his vehicle went over the side of Highway 154, landing about 100 feet below the roadway.
The crash was reported shortly after 4 p.m., roughly one mile west of the Rancho San Marcos Golf Course.
Responding crews from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department found the driver pinned beneath the vehicle with severe injuries.
Firefighters conducted “heavy extrication,” stabilizing the vehicle, using lift bags to raise it, and employing a rope system to bring the victim back up to the highway.
A Calstar medical helicopter landed on the roadway after the California Highway Patrol temporarily shut down Highway 154 in both directions. The driver was airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. His identity and updated condition have not yet been released.
Santa Barbara City Fire and Los Padres National Forest personnel assisted at the scene.
CHP is investigating what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
