Kern County, CA – Four people were hospitalized after a traffic collision involving a semi-truck that happened Wednesday afternoon in Lost Hills.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the rear-end collision occurred around 11:15 a.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway just north of the Twisselman Road off-ramp.
A sedan crashed into the back of a big rig under unclear circumstances.
All the car’s occupants were able to get out of the vehicle and stand on the right shoulder.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and transported four people to Kern Medical with minor injuries.
Multiple northbound freeway lanes were shut down following the accident. The lanes were reopened around 1 p.m.
Kern County remains a critical corridor for semi-truck safety in California, primarily due to its role as a major logistics hub along Highway 99, I-5, and SR-58. According to 2024–2025 California Highway Patrol (CHP) and SafeTREC reports, large trucks are involved in roughly 9% of the county’s fatal crashes, a figure that reflects the high volume of commercial traffic. The occupants of passenger vehicles account for nearly 70% of fatalities in traffic collisions involving trucks due to the size and mass comparison of the cars to the commercial vehicles.
Data from the Kern Council of Governments (Kern COG) 2026 Regional Transportation Improvement Program identifies specific “truck-related” risk factors, including heavy grade transitions and driver fatigue.
