Jacksonville, FL – Three people died, and four others were hospitalized after a fiery multi-vehicle collision that happened Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the pileup was reported around 12:30 p.m., March 1, on Atlantic Boulevard over Little Pottsburg Creek.
Based on a preliminary investigation, a teenager was driving an Infinity sedan westbound when the car crossed over a median and into opposing traffic. Three other vehicles traveling eastbound – two SUVs and a sedan – collided as a result. Two of the cars caught fire.
The Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department responded to the scene.
One of the SUVs was occupied by three people. All the occupants died at the scene.
Two men in the other SUV were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. A woman in her 50s driving the eastbound sedan, and the teen driver, were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
An investigation into the collision is ongoing. It was unclear if the teen was arrested and if they would face any criminal charges.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and local FDOT data, Jacksonville frequently ranks as a top city for accident volume, recording approximately 34,000 crashes in 2023 alone.
Recent statistics show an average of 150 to 220 fatalities annually in Duval County. A significant 2025–2026 trend identified by NHTSA is the city’s struggle with DUI-related deaths, where Jacksonville has previously been ranked as the deadliest U.S. city per capita for impaired driving. To address this, the city launched its first Vision Zero Action Plan in July 2025, targeting a “High Injury Network” of volatile streets where serious injuries are concentrated. While preliminary 2025 data suggests a gradual statewide decline in fatalities, Jacksonville continues to face challenges with distracted driving and hit-and-run incidents, which account for roughly 25% of local collisions.
