Irvine, CA – An 87-year-old man was killed, and a driver was injured in a collision involving a Tesla SUV and a mobility scooter in Irvine Thursday night, according to police.
The fatal crash occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on May 14, 2026, near the intersection of Irvine Boulevard and Groveland, near the Stonegate residential community.
Investigators reported that the driver of a Tesla SUV was traveling westbound on Irvine Boulevard on a green traffic signal while the man on the mobility scooter was traveling northbound in the crosswalk at Groveland when the collision occurred.
Emergency personnel from the Orange County Fire Authority and the Irvine Police Department responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures on the scooter rider. Despite rescue efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet publicly released his identity. The driver of the Tesla sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Investigators said DUI is not believed to have been a factor in the deadly collision.
Irvine police officers and Orange County Fire Authority personnel responded to the scene and conducted the on-scene investigation following the crash.
The collision caused disruptions in the area near Irvine Boulevard and Groveland as authorities investigated the fatal incident.
The Irvine Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the incident.
