Encinitas, CA – A San Diego man who was killed early Saturday after he was struck by another vehicle while attempting to help at the scene of a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in Encinitas has been identified, according to authorities.

The victim was identified as Berhane Woldemicael, 73, of San Diego.

The incident occurred around 3:05 a.m. on September 12 on northbound I-5 north of Leucadia Boulevard. According to the Medical Examiner’s Office, Woldemicael had been involved in a multi-vehicle collision and exited his vehicle before he was struck by another vehicle.

CHP reported that the initial crash involved a dark-colored SUV, a Nissan Sentra, and a Honda Civic. Information on circumstances leading to the initial collision and the subsequent impact involving Woldemicael was not immediately available.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and found Woldemicael after he was struck. He was pronounced dead at approximately 3:10 a.m.

Northbound I-5 was closed near Leucadia Boulevard while CHP officers investigated the crash and evidence was collected. Several lanes were gradually reopened, although one lane remained closed for an extended period.

The fatal crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol
