In 2023, Sacramento experienced 25,996 total crashes, which resulted in 297 fatal and serious injuries. The city has struggled with a disproportionately high rate of fatal accidents compared to the state average; for instance, in 2010, Sacramento's fatal accident rate per 100,000 people was double the California average. A significant and ongoing concern is the high number of incidents involving vulnerable road users, with both pedestrians and cyclists being overrepresented in fatality statistics. Preliminary data for 2024 indicates at least 32 fatalities in the city. Across Sacramento County, data from the years leading up to 2022 showed major highways such as Interstate 5, Highway 99, and Highway 50 as particularly dangerous roadways. Common primary factors contributing to these incidents include speed, impaired driving, and distracted driving. Specific crash types, such as broadside (T-bone) collisions, were identified as the deadliest in 2023, accounting for nearly 20% of fatal wrecks that year.
