Los Angeles consistently experiences a high volume of traffic collisions due to its dense population, extensive roadways, and heavy traffic. While statewide traffic fatalities decreased nearly 11% from 4,539 in 2022 to 4,061 in 2023 according to OTS quick stats, Los Angeles saw elevated numbers in recent years, with approximately 336–345 traffic deaths reported in 2023 (more than homicides that year) and around 302 in 2024, reflecting a slight decline but remaining at historically high levels compared to pre-pandemic figures. OTS rankings highlight areas such as alcohol-involved crashes, speeding, nighttime incidents, hit-and-run, pedestrian and bicyclist safety, and motorcycle collisions, where larger cities like Los Angeles often face challenges relative to peers in similar population groups.
