San Bernardino, CA –Â One person was killed after a solo-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 215 early Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal San Bernardino crash occurred at approximately 7:58 a.m. on December 29 on the southbound Interstate 215 Orange Show Road off-ramp, where CHP officers were dispatched to reports of a serious collision.
CHP logs indicate a gray vehicle rolled at least six times before coming to rest down an embankment. The incident involved a single vehicle with a lone occupant, and responders checked for a possible ejection after the rollover.
Firefighters and paramedics confirmed one fatality at approximately 8:20 a.m. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests were made, and no other vehicles were reported involved.
The cause of the rollover crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet determined what led the vehicle to lose control and overturn multiple times.
CHP officers, fire crews, and paramedics responded to the scene, and an airship was requested during the response. The San Bernardino County Coroner was notified and responded to the location.
The crash impacted traffic on the southbound I-215 Orange Show Road off-ramp as emergency crews worked to investigate the scene and remove the vehicle from the embankment.
The fatal crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol as officials continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the rollover.
In 2024, San Bernardino County recorded approximately 14,615 people injured or killed in vehicle collisions, a slight decline from previous years, but the county maintains a high fatality rate per capita compared to other Southern California counties. This rate of 17.22 deaths per 100,000 residents is more than double that of larger counties like Los Angeles and San Diego, suggesting that residents in less densely populated areas of the county face a greater individual risk on the road. Â While the overall per capita rate of crash victims has been on a modest downward trend since 2015, the data highlights specific areas of concern. For instance, despite a decrease in overall pedestrian injuries and fatalities in 2023 and 2024, the rate of cyclist victims has continued to increase, reaching a 10-year high. In recent years (2022-2024), cyclists and pedestrians accounted for 6% of all traffic collisions. In 2021 specifically, San Bernardino County was ranked high in California for several collision types, including total fatal and injury collisions, alcohol-involved incidents, and pedestrian-involved crashes. The county’s geography, which includes major interstates like I-10, I-15, and I-215 that experience heavy congestion and extreme weather conditions, contributes to the challenging traffic safety landscape.
