Douglas County, OR – Two people were injured in a collision between two vehicles near Glide in Douglas County on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Oregon State Police, the wreck happened on Highway 138E nearly four miles west of Glide shortly before 3:55 p.m. January 29.

Authorities reported that a vehicle heading east on Highway 138E drifted across the centerline into the westbound side and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle. The report indicates that the eastbound driver may have had a medical emergency just prior to moving out of their travel lane.

Both vehicles came to a stop on the westbound shoulder of the highway and the drivers were stuck in their vehicles.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and extricated both drivers. They were then transported by ambulance to CHI Mercy Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The eastbound vehicle sustained major front-end damage while the other vehicle had major damage to its right-hand side. They were both removed from the scene by tow trucks.

No further details were immediately released. The Oregon State Police is conducting an investigation into the incident.

According to the Oregon State Police Traffic Safety Division, in 2024, there were more than 35,000 reported traffic collisions across the state, resulting in over 300 fatalities. On rural stretches like Interstate 138, rollovers and head-on crashes remain a leading crash type, primarily due to high speeds and roadway departure factors.

National data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that in 2023, over 38,000 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the United States, with rollover and roadway departure crashes accounting for a significant portion of fatal outcomes.

Unsafe lane departures and roadway run‐offs can have catastrophic consequences, particularly for older drivers and at nighttime. Drivers should always remain attentive, maintain safe speeds, and avoid distractions. If you witness or are involved in a crash, contact emergency services immediately and remain at the scene if safe to do so. Staying informed and practicing defensive driving can help reduce the risk of similar tragedies on Oregon roadways.
