Chico, CA – 89-year-old Joel Seltzer died after he was struck by a vehicle Sunday night at an intersection in Chico.
According to the Chico Police Department, the incident occurred around 9:12 p.m. on September 6, 2026, at East Avenue and Ceres Avenue.
Police officers and other emergency personnel responded to the scene and found Seltzer, a Chico resident, with critical injuries.
Seltzer was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Chico police conducted a preliminary investigation and established that the man had left his home, which is near the crash scene, without informing anyone. Surveillance footage shows he was crossing the street against a red traffic signal when he was hit by a vehicle.
The driver of the car, a 72-year-old Oroville resident, stopped and remained at the scene after the collision. The motorist was not impaired, and speed was not a contributing factor.
The accident is under investigation by the CPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team.
