Carson, CA – The man who was killed in a collision involving two vehicles on the Gardena (91) Freeway in Carson early Monday morning has been identified.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, Matthew Hellums, 38, died in the accident that took place on the westbound freeway just west of Central Avenue shortly before 12:38 a.m. January 19.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a minivan and a car crashed in the westbound lanes of the freeway for unspecified reasons. Both vehicles came to a stop blocking the HOV lane.
Authorities reported that Hellums was declared deceased at the scene. Authorities did not specify which vehicle Hellums was riding in at the time of the accident.
One other party was transported to a hospital for treatment. The extent of the patient’s injuries was not specified.
Lanes 1, 2, and 3 and the HOV lane were shut down as authorities performed on-scene investigations and the scene was cleared. All lanes had reopened as of 4:20 a.m.
The California Highway Patrol is still trying to figure out what led up to the deadly collision.
