According to California Highway Patrol reports, Estrella was driving a 2015 black Honda Civic on northbound Highway 99 in the No. 3 Lane at a high rate of speed when he tried to overtake a 2019 Peterbilt semi-truck.

Bakersfield, CA – The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who was killed in a collision with a big rig in south Bakersfield on Sunday morning.
Angel Anthony Estrella, 30, of Bakersfield, was killed in the collision that took place at around 1:58 a.m. on May 10, on Highway 99 at Hosking Road.
According to California Highway Patrol reports, Estrella was driving a 2015 black Honda Civic on northbound Highway 99 in the No. 3 Lane at a high rate of speed when he tried to overtake a 2019 Peterbilt semi-truck.
The Honda, however, crashed into the rear of the big rig’s trailer and the impact sent the Honda off the right shoulder of the highway underneath the Hosking Avenue overpass.
CHP and emergency crews responded to the scene and Estrella was declared deceased shortly after.
The operator of the big rig was transported to Kern Medical for treatment of minor injuries.
No other injuries were reported in the incident. It’s unclear whether alcohol or drugs played any role in the accident.
The California Highway Patrol is conducting an ongoing investigation into the accident.
