Azusa, CA. – Several people were injured early Tuesday morning after a multi-vehicle crash that shut down portions of the Foothill (210) Freeway in Azusa, authorities said.
The crash occurred at approximately 1:40 a.m. on Citrus Avenue, just west of the eastbound 210 Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Responding officers arrived to find multiple vehicles involved in the collision and blocking several eastbound lanes of the freeway. One of the vehicles was reported to be stopped across lanes near the Citrus Avenue off-ramp.
Emergency responders transported the injured victims to Pomona Valley Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert closing three eastbound lanes of the 210 Freeway at the Citrus Avenue off-ramp for nearly two hours as officers investigated the cause of the crash and cleared the roadway.
The investigation into the circumstances leading up to the collision remains ongoing.
In the 2023 California Office of Traffic Safety data for Azusa, there were 86 victims killed and injured in total fatal and injury collisions, placing the city 85th out of 93 comparable cities, indicating a relatively low ranking (better performance) compared to others. However, Azusa had a notably high ranking (indicating a high number of incidents) for victims injured in collisions involving a “Had Been Drinking Driver < 21” category, ranking 3rd out of 93. Other specific areas of concern that year included victims in motorcycle collisions (ranked 23/93) and pedestrian collisions (ranked 68/93). For comparison, in 2022, Azusa reported a higher number of 159 total victims in fatal and injury collisions, with an overall ranking of 41st out of 90 cities. The city also saw 25 alcohol-involved crash victims and 15 victims in motorcycle collisions that year. These statistics help the OTS and local law enforcement agencies, such as the Azusa Police Department, identify specific problems and secure funding for targeted enforcement and safety programs to mitigate risky driving behaviors and improve overall road safety.
