Apple Valley, CA – Authorities have identified the driver who was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Monday afternoon in Apple Valley.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, 27-year-old Keith Morris, of Apple Valley, was the victim of the accident that took place on Waalew and Corwin roads at around 4:36 p.m. January 12.
During the on-scene investigations, deputies learned that Morris was driving a green 2016 Honda Civic west on Waalew Road when he tried to make a left turn onto southbound Corwin Road.
The Civic ended up in the path of a tan 2005 Chevy Silverado heading north and the two vehicles collided.
The deputies and fire crews responded to the scene shortly after and attended to the people involved. Both Morris and a passenger in his vehicle, a 15-year-old Apple Valley girl, were transported to a hospital with major injuries.
Morris was later declared deceased at the hospital. There was no update on the condition of the teen.
The driver of the Chevy, a 23-year-old Apple Valley man, stayed at the scene and was cooperative with the investigators.
Alcohol and drugs were not suspected to have played a role in the collision, authorities said. The events leading up to the crash are under investigation by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department‘s Major Accident Investigative Team.
In 2023, Apple Valley recorded 297 total fatal and injury collisions, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), up from 275 in 2022, indicating a slight increase in serious crashes year-over-year. These figures include all collisions where at least one person was killed or injured and reflect ongoing traffic safety concerns in this San Bernardino County community. Alcohol-involved collisions were 31 in 2023, a modest decrease from 36 in 2022, while motorcycle-related injuries or deaths remained fairly consistent with 29 in 2023. Pedestrian-involved collisions numbered 13 in 2023, down from 18 in 2022, and bicyclist incidents were low at 2. Among the serious collisions, speed-related crashes were 41, and nighttime (9 pm–3 am) crashes were 23 in 2023, both lower than the prior year. The number of hit-and-run collisions fell sharply to 4 in 2023, and DUI arrests decreased to 29, suggesting some progress in enforcement.
