Sacramento County is grappling with a persistent rise in traffic fatalities, having surpassed 100 deaths well before the end of 2025. According to 2023–2024 OTS rankings, the county recorded 11,407 victims killed or injured, ranking 27th out of 58 counties. While this ranking is mid-tier, specific categories reveal acute risks: Sacramento ranks 4th in the state for bicyclist injuries and 7th for pedestrian victims. Locally, people walking and biking account for only 1% of travel but are involved in nearly half of all serious injury and fatal crashes, highlighting a severe vulnerability for non-motorized users.
The primary crash factors identified in 2026 analysis include unsafe speed (15%), DUI (12%), and right-of-way violations (10%). Notably, broadside collisions and vehicle-pedestrian strikes remain the deadliest incident types.
