Pedestrian accidents in California

In California, pedestrian fatalities have been substantial: for example, in 2023, there were 1,106 pedestrian deaths in motor-vehicle crashes. In 2022, the figure was slightly higher, at 1,213 pedestrian fatalities. Over the decade from 2011 to 2020, the number of fatal pedestrian crashes climbed significantly — increasing by about 46.2% — while other types of traffic fatalities grew by only 14.4%.

Pedestrians and drivers can greatly reduce serious and hit-and-run crashes by staying alert, predictable, and visible. Pedestrians should cross at crosswalks, avoid distractions, and make themselves visible, especially at night. Drivers should slow down, stay focused, and always yield to pedestrians. A little patience and awareness from both sides goes a long way in preventing tragedies.
