San Bernardino County experienced a total of 14,615 people injured or killed in vehicle collisions in 2024, a 3% one-year decline in the absolute number of victims. Despite this slight decrease, the county maintains a high level of risk and has a per capita fatality rate of 17.22 deaths per 100,000 residents, which is significantly higher than larger Southern California counties like Los Angeles and San Diego. Â Speeding is a major contributing factor to accidents in the region; San Bernardino County ranks as the second highest in California for speeding-related fatalities. Pedestrians and cyclists are particularly vulnerable, with these groups involved in 6% of all traffic collisions between 2022 and 2024. While the number of pedestrian injuries/fatalities has decreased slightly in recent years, the rate for cyclists has continued to rise, reaching a 10-year high. Â The county’s extensive geography, including major interstates like I-10, I-15, and I-215, contributes to a complex traffic safety landscape. The San Bernardino County Department of Public Works has developed a Local Roadway Safety Plan (LRSP) to address these issues, aiming for a vision of zero traffic deaths.
