Los Angeles, CA. — A 21-year-old Elyssa Fresquez was killed early Wednesday morning in a big rig collision on the Foothill (210) Freeway in Sunland, authorities reported.
The crash occurred around 2:13 a.m. on the westbound lanes of the Freeway, just east of Sunland Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Investigators said a gray Toyota Prius rear-ended a produce-loaded big rig parked on the right shoulder, becoming pinned underneath the trailer.
The woman driving the Prius was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office later identified the victim as Fresquez.
CHP reported that the trailer was carrying more than 3 million pounds of produce, and absorbent materials were required to clean up oil spilled onto the shoulder.
Traffic was stopped at Lowell Avenue, and a SigAlert was issued at 3:16 a.m., closing lanes 3 and 4 for investigation and cleanup. Lane 3 reopened at 4:27 a.m., and all lanes were fully reopened by 6:45 a.m.
CHP is investigating the cause of the crash.
