Shafter, CA.- A teen was killed in a Monday evening crash that sent a vehicle into a reservoir in Bakersfield, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The wreck occurred on Lerdo Highway at Scaroni Avenue at around 6:09 p.m. November 3.
According to CHP, a 2006 Ford Windstar van was traveling northbound on Scaroni Avenue when it failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck on the left side by a 2023 Ford F-250 pickup truck headed east on Lerdo Highway.
The impact sent the van off the roadway and into a reservoir, where it became partially submerged.
Witnesses helped a trapped occupant of the van stay above the water surface until emergency crews arrived and freed them.
The driver of the van, an 18-year-old Shafter man, and his passenger, a 17-year-old Shafter boy, were both extricated by the firefighters.
The two and the truck driver, who had minor injuries, were all taken to Kern Medical for treatment.
The 17-year-old passenger was pronounced deceased at the hospital at 12:56 a.m. on Tuesday.
CHP said alcohol and drugs were not suspected in the incident, which remained under investigation.
