, CA. – A 17-year-old girl was critically hurt when she was hit by a driver who ran a red light at an intersection in Redwood City, authorities reported.

According to police, the teen was struck around noon on May 5 near El Camino Real and Dumbarton Avenue.

The girl was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when a speeding car ran a red light and struck her, throwing her into the air before she landed down unconscious.

The victim was hospitalized in critical condition.

Redwood City police on Monday said the driver of the car, identified as a 64-year-old man, may have suffered a medical event just before the crash. The motorist did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
