Los Altos, CA – Authorities have identified two drivers who died in a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 280 in Los Altos.
The fatal collision occurred around 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, near the Foothill Expressway exit.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner identified the victims as 19-year-old Brenno Henrique De Sousa Bittancourt of Belmont and 33-year-old Benjamin Alexander Hernandez of San Jose.
Investigators said a northbound Lexus veered off the freeway, struck the center concrete median, and overturned onto the southbound lanes. During the rollover, the Lexus collided with a southbound Kia SUV, and the Lexus driver was ejected onto the freeway.
A tire that came off the Lexus struck a Toyota sedan, killing its driver, later identified as Hernandez. Two other vehicles, a Tesla SUV and a Toyota SUV traveling ahead of the Kia, were damaged by debris from the crash.
The collision forced the closure of southbound I-280 for more than four hours, with traffic diverted onto Magdalena Avenue while crews responded to the scene and cleared debris.
The incident remains under investigation.
