Riverside, CA — A 15-year-old passenger was killed and three others were injured following a rear-end collision on Interstate 215 in Riverside early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision was reported at approximately 3:33 a.m. Sunday, August 23, 2026, on southbound Interstate 215 near Cactus Avenue.
According to CHP’s preliminary investigation, the BMW was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of the GMC pickup. The GMC was towing a trailer carrying a side-by-side ATV when it was hit from behind.
Both the BMW and the ATV overturned after the crash.
CHP said a 15-year-old passenger in the BMW suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel. The name of the victim was not immediately released.
The BMW driver and two other passengers sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
The BMW driver was not hurt but was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, as per the CHP.
The investigation is continuing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. CHP’s preliminary findings identified the BMW’s high rate of speed and suspected alcohol impairment as factors under investigation.
Fire personnel and other emergency responders assisted at the scene, where the overturned vehicles and trailer required attention following the crash.
The fatal Riverside crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
