Curry County, OR – A 36-year-old motorcyclist was killed Sunday afternoon after his motorcycle collided with a vehicle and he was subsequently struck by a van on Highway 101 in Curry County, according to Oregon State Police.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 12:38 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, near milepost 352 on Highway 101 at the Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint.

OSP said Louis Henry Vowell III of Sisters was riding a black Triumph motorcycle northbound on Highway 101 at a high rate of speed when he attempted to overtake multiple vehicles in a passing lane.

As the motorcycle entered the passing lane, it collided with the rear of a gray Mazda CX-5 operated by 56-year-old Russell Keith Moore of Pulaski, Arkansas. The Mazda was turning westbound into the Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint. Vowell was thrown from the motorcycle and was subsequently struck by a gray Mercedes Sprinter van operated by 58-year-old Jeffrey Alan Ludwick of Rogue River.

Vowell was pronounced deceased at the scene. Moore and two adult passengers in the Mazda were reportedly not injured. Ludwick and an adult passenger in the Mercedes also reportedly escaped injury.

Highway 101 was impacted for approximately two hours while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
