A female passenger of the Chevrolet was transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, where she later died

Merced County, CA. – One person was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Thursday morning in Merced County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 10 a.m. near Sycamore Street, just north of Bloss Avenue.
33-year-old Jose Perez Hernandez was driving the Audi south on Sycamore Street at a high speed when he drifted into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a Chevrolet SUV operated by an 84-year-old man.
The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to Emmanuel Medical Center in Turlock for moderate injuries.
An 83-year-old female passenger of the Chevrolet was transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto and later died in the hospital.
Hernandez fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended and taken to Mercy Medical Center in Merced. He was later arrested and booked into Merced County Jail on charges of DUI and felony hit-and-run.
More details on the accident were not released.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
