Los Angeles, CA – 77-year-old Hossein Safaie died in a multi-vehicle collision that happened early Friday morning on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Office of Medical Examiner reported.
The fatal collision took place around 2:56 a.m. on June 19, 2026, in the southbound lanes of the freeway, south of Glendale Boulevard near Griffith Park.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident involved four vehicles, including a gray Toyota Prius and a gray sedan.
Responding emergency crews found one person down in the center divider.
Authorities said one person was killed in the crash. That victim was identified by the medical examiner as Safaie. His city of residence was not mentioned.
Another person was hospitalized with unknown injuries.
The cause of the collision is under investigation.

Los Angeles, CA – At least one person died in a traffic collision that happened early Friday morning on the 5 Freeway in Los Angeles.
According to California Highway Patrol logs, the incident was reported around 2:56 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the freeway just south of Glendale Boulevard.
First responders found a gray Toyota Prius blocking the No. 1 lane, a gray sedan in the center divider, and two other vehicles on the right shoulder.
One person was also located down in the center divider, but it was unclear if they were a pedestrian involved in the collision or an occupant of one of the cars.
The report said at least one person died in the crash.
At least two lanes were closed for about three hours following the accident. The lanes were reopened at 5:55 a.m.
CHP is investigating the collision.
