San Diego, CA – The authorities have released the identity of a motorcyclist who died following a traffic collision on El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego’s El Cerrito neighborhood on Friday afternoon.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office identified the deceased as 28-year-old Daniel Thomas Canniff of La Mesa.
The fatal collision occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026, at El Cajon Boulevard and 56th Street in San Diego.
The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) said a 22-year-old woman was driving a Toyota sedan westbound on El Cajon Boulevard when she attempted to make a left turn onto 56th Street. At the same time, Canniff was riding a motorcycle eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard when he collided with the front passenger side of the Toyota.
Canniff suffered critical injuries in the collision and was transported by paramedics to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:33 p.m. The driver of the Toyota reportedly sustained minor injuries and was also taken to a hospital for treatment. No arrests were reported.
Authorities said alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the collision. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by the San Diego Police Department.
San Diego police officers and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene after 911 calls reported the crash. Investigators later gathered evidence and processed the scene along El Cajon Boulevard.
The fatal motorcycle crash remains under investigation by the San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division.
