Monterey County, CA – 51-year-old David Olaeta was arrested after three people died in a suspected DUI multi-vehicle collision that happened Saturday night on State Route 1 near Moss Landing.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision was reported around 10:18 p.m. north of Springfield Road.
Investigators said Olaeta was driving a GMC pickup truck southbound on SR-1 when, for an unknown reason, he crossed the double yellow lines and sideswiped a northbound Ford pickup truck.
Olaeta’s GMC continued southbound in the northbound lane and crashed head-on with a Honda sedan traveling behind the Ford.
The Honda sedan was occupied by three men. All were taken to the hospital, where they later died from their injuries.
The Ford was occupied by four Watsonville residents. One of them, a 58-year-old woman, was hospitalized with unspecified injuries. The others were reportedly not hurt.
Olaeta showed signs of impairment and was arrested at the scene. He was transported to the hospital with injuries believed to be serious. He was later booked into the Monterey County Jail on suspicion of DUI causing injury, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. His bail was set at $600,000.
An earlier report about the crash indicated that at least one person was killed in the crash.
