Preliminary reports indicate that a 22-year-old man was driving a 2025 Honda Civic southbound on Highway 111 at a high rate of speed when he failed to stop in time and slammed into the back of a 2022 Toyota Corolla.

Imperial, CA – One person was killed and another injured in a crash involving a suspected impaired motorist in Imperial on Sunday morning.
According to a report by the California Highway Patrol, authorities responded at about 5:05 a.m. April 26, on Highway 111, north of Worthington Road.
Preliminary reports indicate that a 22-year-old man was driving a 2025 Honda Civic southbound on Highway 111 at a high rate of speed when he failed to stop in time and slammed into the back of a 2022 Toyota Corolla.
The Toyota, driven by a 53-year-old man, was stopped at a red light when it was rear-ended by the Honda.
The driver of the Toyota was wearing a seatbelt but was pronounced deceased at the scene. A deputy coroner with the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene.
The victim’s identity was not released pending notification of the next of kin.
The driver of the Honda was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. He was loaded onto a REACH Air Ambulance and airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center with major injuries.
According to the authorities, impairment is suspected to have played a role in the accident.
The California Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the deadly accident.
