At around 5:04 p.m. on May 23, authorities received a call about the crash on Highway 50 near Sierra-at-Tahoe Road.
South Lake Tahoe, CA – A 33-year-old man from Sacramento died, and 41-year-old Sergey Panasenko of North Highlands was hospitalized after a two-vehicle collision that happened Saturday afternoon in South Lake Tahoe, the California Highway Patrol reported.
At around 5:04 p.m. on May 23, authorities received a call about the crash on Highway 50 near Sierra-at-Tahoe Road.
Multiple agencies, including CHP and Lake Valley Fire Protection District, responded to the scene and found a 2010 Honda Fit and a 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe involved in the accident.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the 33-year-old man was driving the Honda westbound on Hwy 50 when he made an unsafe turn, moving into the eastbound lanes, where the Chevrolet was oncoming. The vehicles ended up colliding.
The firefighters pronounced the Honda driver dead at the scene.
Panasenko, who was driving the Chevy, was transported to Barton Hospital with moderate injuries.
According to CHP, drugs, alcohol, and speed do not appear to be contributing factors.
An investigation into the collision is ongoing.

South Lake Tahoe, CA – At least one person died in a traffic collision that happened Saturday afternoon on Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the two-vehicle collision occurred around 5:04 p.m. near the turn lane at Sierra at Tahoe Road.
A black Chevrolet Tahoe and a pickup truck with a boat were involved in the accident. Both vehicles stopped on the right-hand shoulder after the crash.
Firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene.
The report said at least one person was killed in the accident.
Both vehicles were towed away from the scene.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.
