Los Angeles, CA – One person was killed and two others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 East in Los Angeles early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision occurred on the eastbound lanes of I-10 just east of Crenshaw Boulevard at approximately 4:57 a.m.

Investigators say the crash involved five vehicles, including a red Chevrolet Cruze, a black pickup truck, and a red SUV. The vehicles collided in the eastbound lanes under circumstances that remain unclear, blocking nearly all lanes and leaving debris scattered across the roadway.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims, and no arrests have been reported.

Emergency crews, including CHP officers, firefighters, and the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, responded to the scene. Authorities requested a hard closure of multiple lanes and diverted traffic off at Crenshaw Boulevard and La Brea Avenue while crews cleared debris and assisted victims.

The crash caused significant disruption along the eastbound I-10, with several lanes shut down for hours. Traffic congestion worsened as some drivers attempted to use on-ramps incorrectly, leading to dangerous wrong-way driving and multiple near-miss incidents in the area. All lanes were eventually reopened by approximately 9:27 a.m.

The incident remains under active investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, California records over 4,000 traffic fatalities annually, with a significant number occurring on major urban freeways like those in Los Angeles. Data from the California Highway Patrol indicates that early morning crashes are often linked to reduced visibility, speeding, or impaired and fatigued driving
