Los Angeles County continues to report the highest volume of traffic incidents in California, though it reflects a significant downward trend in fatalities. In 2024, the county recorded 653 traffic deaths, a notable 25% decrease from 868 in 2022. Despite this improvement, the region saw over 58,000 injury-involved collisions last year, maintaining its status as one of the state’s most dangerous driving environments. Within the city of Los Angeles, traffic fatalities (302 in 2024) have notably exceeded the local homicide rate for two consecutive years, with South Los Angeles suffering a disproportionate share of these losses.
According to 2024–2025 OTS and SafeTREC data, the primary crash factors remain unsafe speed, DUI, and distracted driving. Speeding-related fatalities, while declining 40% since 2021, still accounted for 196 deaths in 2024. Pedestrians and cyclists remain the most vulnerable groups, representing roughly 40% of all fatal victims.
