According to Safe Oakland Streets (SOS), a Citywide initiative to prevent serious and fatal traffic crashes and eliminate crash inequities on Oakland’s streets, the leading causes of serious collisions in Oakland include speeding (a factor in 25% of deadly crashes), failure to yield, running red lights/stop signs, and driving under the influence. Three-quarters of severe or fatal injuries occur at intersections. Vulnerable road users are particularly at risk; people walking, biking, or using public transit account for nearly half of severe or fatal injuries, despite making up less than 30% of commute trips. A person’s chance of survival if hit by a vehicle traveling at 40 mph is less than 20%. The data also reveals significant racial inequities, with Black Oaklanders two to three times more likely to be killed or severely injured in a crash compared to other residents.
