Wrong-way driving remains a rare but disproportionately lethal threat on California highways, accounting for approximately 1% of all crashes but a significantly higher percentage of fatalities. According to Caltrans and CHP data, roughly 60% of wrong-way drivers are found to be impaired by alcohol or drugs. While these incidents are infrequent, they are typically high-speed, head-on collisions.
