Riverside, CA – A pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle near a Riverside intersection on Wednesday morning, according to the Riverside Police Department.
The incident took place in the area of University and Victoria avenues shortly before 7:45 a.m. March 11.
According to a preliminary investigation, a man was on the sidewalk when he entered the roadway and was hit by a white 2011 BMW traveling westbound on University Avenue.
Riverside police responded to the scene and found the pedestrian with major injuries. The victim was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared deceased.
The driver stopped in the westbound lanes of University Avenue after striking the pedestrian. The driver was cooperative with law enforcement.
Authorities could not clarify whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident.
The Riverside Police Department’s Traffic Bureau detectives are conducting an investigation into the collision. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the department at (951)828-8720.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Riverside County recently ranked 37th out of 58 counties for total fatal and injury victims (where 1st is the least safe).
A critical concern in the county is motorcycle safety; Riverside has previously ranked 6th worst in the state for motorcycle-involved injuries and fatalities. Alcohol also plays a significant role, with the county ranking 15th worst for “had been drinking” drivers aged 21–34. While 2024 and 2025 saw a gradual decline in overall fatalities – mirroring a statewide 6% drop – Riverside continues to struggle with distracted driving, ranking as the second-deadliest county in California for distracted driving fatalities in recent years.
