Motorcyclist and Driver Hospitalized after Plainfield Crash on S Route 59

Plainfield, IL – Two people were hospitalized after two collisions that happened Monday morning in Plainfield, authorities reported.

At around 5:30 a.m. March 9, police officers were dispatched to the 15719 block of S. Route 59 just in front of Dunkin’, where two vehicles had collided.

As the officers were responding to the scene, another collision involving a motorcycle occurred minutes later at the same scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the first crash involved a Ford box truck and a Cadillac SUV. The truck was making a left turn out of the coffee shop parking lot when the driver failed to yield and hit the SUV as it crossed the inside northbound lane of Route 59.

After the collision, the truck moved to a nearby parking lot, and the SUV remained in the traffic lanes where it had been hit.

The second collision took place around 5:37 a.m. when a Honda motorcycle traveling north on Route 59 hit the unoccupied SUV. The motorcyclist was thrown from the bike onto the traffic lanes.

The driver of the SUV was taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville with non-life-threatening injuries.

The rider was transported to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital with serious injuries. They remained in stable condition.

The box truck driver was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device and failure to yield when turning left from a private drive.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) 2024 Crash Facts, the state recorded 303,913 total crashes, resulting in 1,178 fatalities and over 89,000 injuries. While total fatalities saw a slight dip from previous peak years, the mileage death rate remained steady at 1.1 deaths per 100 million miles traveled. Notably, over 65% of all collisions occurred on urban roadways, with Cook County alone accounting for more than half of the state’s total crash volume.

The 2024 data also reveal that alcohol impairment was a factor in approximately 21% of fatal crashes, while speeding and distracted driving remained the leading primary causes of injury.
