Pedestrian safety in Ventura County remains a significant concern amid ongoing risks to vulnerable road users on urban streets, highways (e.g., US 101, SR-118), and local arterials. As per California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) data from SWITRS, in 2023, Ventura County recorded 188 pedestrian victims (killed or injured), ranking 30/58 among California counties (mid-range relative risk in empirical Bayesian-adjusted metrics factoring population and vehicle miles traveled). The data included 22 victims under 15 (ranking 43/58) and 33 victims aged 65+ (ranking 34/58). Earlier data (2020) showed 191 fatal pedestrian accidents countywide, with higher impacts on seniors (26 fatalities for 65+ vs. 14 for under 15).  Statewide pedestrian fatalities declined ~8.8% to 1,106 in 2023 (from 1,213 in 2022), but Ventura County sees persistent issues from speeding, failure to yield, distracted/impaired driving, and crosswalk violations.
