Los Angeles, CA – Several people were injured when a vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree along the sidewalk in the Flower District neighborhood of Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the crash occurred in the area of San Julian Street and E. 8th Street outside of Lupita’s Flowers at around 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24.
Initial reports indicate that an SUV jumped a sidewalk and slammed into a tree. It’s still unclear why the driver lost control and left the roadway.
Multiple pedestrians walking in the sidewalk were struck by the vehicle. Two of them reportedly had life-threatening injuries.
The LAPD and Los Angeles Fire Department crews arrived at the scene a few minutes later and located multiple patients.
Medics assessed the victims and determined that seven of them were injured. Five people were hospitalized and two them were listed in critical condition while the others were treated for unspecified injuries.
A bystander attended to a 13-year-old boy who was bleeding from the back and had a suspected broken leg. Medics later transported the victim to hospital, along with the other patients.
According to LAPD, the driver of the SUV stayed at the scene after the accident and cooperated with the authorities.
No additional details on the incident have been released at this time. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating to establish the cause of the collision.
Los Angeles County has historically experienced significant traffic safety challenges, although recent data indicates some improvements in its California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) rankings and a decrease in total victims killed and injured from peak years. The county consistently ranks as one of the most dangerous in the state for traffic collisions, leading in both population and accident volume. In 2022, there were 8,944 victims killed and injured in total fatal and injury collisions, which gave the county an OTS ranking of 14 out of 15 comparable entities, indicating improvement from previous years, where it ranked 1/15 (worst) in 2018 and 2019. Â Despite overall improvements in rankings, specific collision types remain a concern. In 2022, there were 1,524 pedestrian victims killed and injured, and 475 bicyclist victims killed and injured. Pedestrians, in particular, account for a disproportionately high number of traffic deaths in the region, a trend that has persisted in recent years. Alcohol-involved collisions also contributed significantly to the 2022 statistics, with 1,676 victims killed and injured.
