Indio, CA – A crash involving a wrong-way motorist left one person dead and another injured in Indio on Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident happened on Interstate 10, just east of Dillon Road on Tuesday, February 23.
According to CHP, a driver in a Nissan Sentra was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 when they collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota Camry.
Emergency crews and CHP officers responded to the scene minutes later and made contact with the involved parties.
The driver of the Nissan reportedly had major injuries but later succumbed to his injuries. The other driver was treated for minor injuries. The identities of the involved drivers were not immediately released.
According to investigators, the driver of the Nissan was believed to have been driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The accident led to a temporary closure of I-10 at Dillon Road as authorities worked to clear the scene. The California Highway Patrol is handling the ongoing investigation.
