A preliminary investigation reveals that a 76-year-old man was driving southbound on Highway 29 when, for undetermined reasons, he let the vehicle move across the double yellow lines

Calistoga, CA – Three people were injured in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 29 near Calistoga in Napa County Tuesday afternoon.
According to the California Highway Patrol, two vehicles crashed head-on on the highway north of Robert Louis Stevenson State Park at around 12:30 a.m. February 3.
A preliminary investigation reveals that a 76-year-old man was driving southbound on Highway 29 when, for undetermined reasons, he let the vehicle move across the double yellow lines. The vehicle collided head-on with a second car that was traveling northbound.
At this time, CHP is yet to release findings on why the southbound motorist drifted across the yellow lines.
Medics treated multiple injured patients at the scene before they were transported to hospital. The 76-year-old driver was flown with major injuries while the second driver, who also had serious injuries, was transported by ground ambulance.
A passenger in the second vehicle was transported to the hospital with complaint of pain. The identities of the people involved in the accident were not released.
Drugs and alcohol were not suspected to be factors in the accident, authorities reported. The California Highway Patrol officers are working to determine the cause of the accident.
California continues to see a high number of vehicle collisions each year. According to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were over 2,000 fatal crashes and nearly 300,000 total collisions reported statewide in 2024. Rear-end and multi-vehicle collisions on major freeways, such as Highway 29, contribute significantly to injuries and hospitalizations.
Drivers are reminded to maintain safe following distances, reduce speeds in low-light conditions, and avoid distractions while driving. Early-morning commuters should stay alert on busy freeways and always wear seatbelts to reduce the risk of serious injuries in multi-vehicle collisions.
