According to investigators, a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on I-10 drifted to the right shoulder and slammed into another tractor-trailer parked along the interstate

Whitewater, CA – Two people were sent to a hospital after being involved in a multi-vehicle pile-up in Whitewater early Tuesay morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the wreck took place at around 1 a.m. January 3, on Interstate 10 near the Whitewater Rest Area.
According to investigators, a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on I-10 drifted to the right shoulder and slammed into another tractor-trailer parked along the interstate. It’s unclear what caused the driver of the first rig to move onto the shoulder.
The impact caused a rapture to a fuel tank of one of the big rigs and this led to fuel and engine oil being leaked onto the right shoulder of eastbound I-10.
A 2023 white Subaru and two other semi-trucks were involved in other crashes as drivers tried to avoid the scene of the earlier impact.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and lanes were blocked as hazmat crews cleared the leaked fuel and medics attended to the injured parties.
Caltrans and the Department of Environmental Health also responded to the scene.
CHP reported that two patients, a 60-year-old Long Beach man and a 45-year-old man from Bell, were both taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with complaints of pain. No other injuries were reported.
The No. 3 and 4 lanes were temporarily shut down as crews worked to clear the scene. All lanes were reopened by 10 a.m.
The California Highway Patrol is still investigating to establish the cause of the accident.
According to statewide crash type breakdowns from the California Department of Transportation and CHP SWITRS data, head-on collisions accounted for about 9.7 % of all fatal and serious injury crashes between 2018 and 2022 — a disproportionately high share given their relative infrequency compared with other crash types. These collisions often occur when a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic on two-lane roads or freeways without median separation, and they are more likely to result in fatalities than other crash types. Contributing factors include driver impairment (DUI), distracted or fatigued driving, speeding, and unsafe passing or wrong-way travel. Alcohol and drug impairment contribute to a significant proportion of head-on impacts statewide, while rural corridors with limited barriers remain high-risk environments. Due to the direct frontal impact, these collisions frequently lead to severe injuries and deaths even at moderate speeds, underscoring the need for targeted safety measures to reduce lane departure and wrong-way incidents.
