Authorities reported that dense fog in the southbound lanes of Highway 99 blinded some drivers, leading to a pile-up involving at least 17 vehicles

Fresno, CA – A second person has died following a pile-up involving more than a dozen vehicles earlier this month in Fresno.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the wreck happened around 9:15 a.m. January 11, on Highway 99 just south of North Avenue.
Authorities reported that dense fog in the southbound lanes of Highway 99 blinded some drivers, leading to a pile-up involving at least 17 vehicles. One of the drivers was hit when he got out of his his vehicle.
The driver, identified as 61-year-old Gustavo Villanueva Vargas of Fresno, died at the site of the accident.
A passenger in his vehicle died three days later at a hospital. In a GoFundMe page, the victim was identified by family as Gloria Rodriguez.
Several other people, including Vargas’ wife and a cousin, were injured and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Vargas’ wife reportedly fell 40-feet during the accident and remains hospitalized.
Additional information about the crash have not been released. An investigation into the wreck by the California Highway Patrol is ongoing.
