Whitman County, WA – Authorities are working to find out what caused a fatal collision that led to the death of one person and left another with major injuries in Whitman County on Friday afternoon.

The incident was reported just before 1:34 p.m. January 30, on US 195 near Albion Road, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Investigators reported that a 2009 Toyota Corolla was attempting to cross US 195 from Albion Road to Hamilton Hill Road when it was broadsided by a semi-truck. The big rig was traveling southbound on the highway within the speed limit when the incident happened.

The WSP and Whitman County Rural Fire District responded to the incident to assist the involved parties.

A female passenger in the vehicle hit by the big rig was declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was airlifted to Sacred Heart and was reportedly in a coma.

The operator of the semi-truck was uninjured in the accident. The identities of those involved were not released in the WSP report.

Authorities do not believe impairment played a role in the accident.

Due to the crews working to clear the scene, the southbound lanes of US 195 were shut down for over two hours, the Washington State Department of Transportation reported.

The Washington State Patrol is still gathering more information as they piece together evidence to establish the cause of the accident.
