Car crash statistics for Fresno County in 2023, as per the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) data from the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), show a moderate-to-higher risk profile for this populous Central Valley county (approximately 1 million residents) with extensive agricultural traffic, major highways like Highway 99, and urban corridors in Fresno city. OTS rankings compare counties statewide using empirical Bayesian methods incorporating fatal/injury crashes, population, and vehicle miles traveled, though Fresno County does not appear as an extreme outlier in public 2023 summaries. The county recorded 126 traffic fatalities in 2023, a notable decline from 206 in 2022, aligning with California’s statewide drop of nearly 11% (from 4,539 to 4,061 fatalities). Alcohol-involved incidents remain significant, with OTS tracking related victims and impaired driving as persistent factors alongside speeding, distracted driving, and rural high-speed crashes.
