Santa Barbara, CA – A man was struck and severely injured by a vehicle on State Street in Santa Barbara on Wednesday afternoon, the Santa Barbara Police Department reported.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. January 7, emergency crews were dispatched to the scene of the crash at the intersection of Los Olivos Street.

Investigators reveal that the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle believed to be a Sprinter-type van. Specific details on how the pedestrian was hit or whether the victim was in the street were not immediately released.

The SBPD and emergency personnel responded to the scene and located the injured pedestrian down in the roadway. The victim was conscious and breathing when first responders arrived.

The victim was transported by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment. The victim’s identity on condition have not been released.

State Street was shut down for a while as authorities worked at the scene. The Santa Barbara Police Department is conducting an investigation into the collision.

In 2023, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) reported that Santa Barbara County had 492 victims killed or injured in fatal and injury traffic collisions, reflecting serious safety concerns on local roads compared with other California counties. This figure placed the county 14th out of 103 ranked jurisdictions for total fatal and injury crash victims. Among these victims, 67 crashes involved alcohol, and 2 involved drivers under age 21 who had been drinking, highlighting impaired driving as a contributing factor. Particularly concerning were age‑specific categories, with 9 pedestrians aged 65 and older and 9 bicyclists under age 15 included in the counts. In terms of collision patterns, 46 speed‑related crashes, 46 nighttime fatal/injury collisions, and 47 hit‑and‑run incidents were recorded, underscoring persistent risks from risky driving behaviors throughout the county.
