San Jose, CA – A pedestrian who was struck by a car earlier last month died from his injuries about a month later while receiving treatment at a hospital, the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner reported.

According to the San Jose Police Department, the accident occurred around 4:13 p.m. on December 7 at the intersection of Cataldi Drive and Camargo Drive.

A man was reportedly walking west on Cataldi Drive outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a 2007 Nissan Altima traveling west on Cataldi, approaching Camargo.

The man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but doctors stabilized him.

The woman driving the car remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The victim later died from the injuries on January 3, the Medical Examiner’s Office reported. Details about his name, age, and residence were not available.

San Jose, the Bay Area’s largest city, continues to face significant traffic safety challenges despite Vision Zero initiatives aimed at eliminating fatalities. In 2024, the city recorded approximately 49 traffic fatalities, similar to 2023’s count and down from a record high of 65 in 2022. Pedestrians remain disproportionately affected, often comprising nearly half of deaths on multi-lane arterials with higher speed limits. In 2025, fatalities rose sharply, reaching 40 traffic deaths by early December, including 20 pedestrian fatalities, reflecting persistent vulnerabilities for walkers and cyclists. Thousands of injury collisions occur annually amid dense traffic on corridors like El Camino Real. Common causes include speeding, distractions, DUI, and nighttime incidents. The city’s 2025-2029 Vision Zero Action Plan emphasizes infrastructure upgrades, speed reductions, and enforcement to achieve a 30% reduction in severe outcomes by 2030, though rates remain elevated compared to statewide trends.
